What I Learned the First Semester of My MPA

I just finished my first semester as a graduate student at the University of Colorado, Denver campus. I have been taking two online courses this semester, and just submitted my last 10 page paper for 2015! It feels pretty great, to tell the truth! Here is a list of a few things I learned this semester.

1. Grad school with a baby is possible. It's hard, but it is possible. On the positive side, you have an adorable study buddy. On the negative side you have an adorable study buddy. There were a lot of times this semester where I felt I wasn't giving my best effort to Benjamin, and I wasn't giving my best effort to school either. I had to realize and accept that sometimes 'good' or even 'mediocre' effort was enough, and to accept that.

2. I'm smart. And I don't type that to brag or anything, but as a confirmation to myself that I chose the right path for me. School is what I should be doing right now. I am grateful I found a way to chase all of my dreams at the same time, including having a family and getting a masters degree!

3. My husband is so supportive. He reminds me to work on my school work, when my other obligations are enough to overwhelm anyone. He encourages me to do my best. He asks me how school is going and constantly lets me know he will do anything he can to help me. He is the best!!

4. Helping and serving in my community is important to me. Right now in my program, we mainly talk about how people help, or why people help, or how people fundraise, etc. I am excited to one day actually get out in the field and do something to help.

I'm so grateful I have the opportunity to go to school and be a momma to the cutest boy in the whole world. Both of these are huge blessings in my life. And just to show you what it is like to do school, this is how we looked writing this blog post (well I was writing, Benjamin was just trying to destroy the computer mostly!):
