The Hunger Banquet

On Saturday night Daniel and I had the opportunity to attend the Hunger Banquet. For those of you who don't know here is a little bit about it. Everyone pays 8 bucks to get in. Of those who come 10% receive a 3 course fancy dinner at nicely set tables. 20% receive pizza on chairs (no table). The other 70% eat on the floor and eat rice and beans from a group platter. It is meant to resemble the real-life proportions of the world's hunger problems. 70% of the worlds population lives on less than $1.25 a day. That is so crazy to me!!

Daniel and I ended up sitting on the floor eating rice and beans. But even as I sat there I definitely recognized how different it was from real life. We had cups and clean water, silverware and bowls. I didn't have to prepare my food, somebody cleaned up the trash. Yes, I had to sit on the floor but it was in a heated building. It was however a good reminder to me how lucky and blessed we are. Because in the US even the poor are better off than much of the world.

Here are some pictures from our evening:

Rice and Beans
It was a fun evening, although dinner was unconventional. They also had a keynote speaker from the foundation Lets Be Well Red. It is an initiative to improve the lives of women in India by providing them with proper nutrition, including adequate iron. It was an interesting talk.

Overall, Dan and I had a good evening. It was a fun, eye-opening experience!
